About FilesAudit
FilesAudit is a free, browser-based tool for extracting technical metadata from files — EXIF and GPS data from photos, codec and duration details from video and audio, author and revision history from documents, cryptographic hashes for verifying file integrity, and provenance signals (C2PA) that help identify whether a file declares AI involvement in its creation.
We built it because this kind of information is genuinely useful — for journalists verifying the origin of an image, for developers debugging a file that behaves unexpectedly, for photographers checking what their camera actually recorded, for anyone who needs to confirm two files are byte-for- byte identical, or simply out of curiosity about what a file is quietly carrying inside it — but the tools to get at it have historically been scattered across command-line utilities most people never encounter.
What we do
Upload a file, and FilesAudit runs it through its metadata engine (the same class of technology used by archivists, forensic examiners, and professional photo software), computes SHA-256/MD5/CRC32 hashes, and checks for AI-provenance signals — then hands you back a clean, downloadable PDF report. Over 200 file formats are supported: images, video, audio, PDFs and office documents, CAD files, archives, source code, and more.
What we don't do
FilesAudit documents technical evidence — it does not determine legal ownership, authenticity, or admissibility on its own. A hash proves two files are identical; it doesn't prove who created the original. We're direct about that distinction throughout the site, because overstating what metadata analysis can tell you helps no one.
Privacy, by design
Uploaded files are processed for metadata extraction and deleted from our servers within seconds — see our Privacy Policy for the specifics. For situations where you'd rather nothing ever leaves your machine at all, the Desktop App runs the identical analysis engine entirely locally.
